Smith Mountain Lake Named 2nd-Best Lake Beach in the U.S.

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, Va. — Smith Mountain Lake State Park has earned national recognition as one of the premier lake beaches in the United States, coming in at No. 2 in the 2025 USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

The prestigious ranking highlights the park’s popularity and scenic beauty, as votes from travelers and outdoor enthusiasts across the country helped it achieve this honor. The nominees were first selected by a panel of travel professionals and editors, and then the public cast their votes online to determine the winners.

“Smith Mountain Lake has always been a favorite among Virginians and visitors alike,” said Assistant Park Manager Jared Vandergriff. “This recognition confirms what we’ve known all along—our lake and park are truly special. We’re so thankful for the community support and everyone who voted for us.”

Located along the shores of Virginia’s second-largest freshwater lake, the park features a 500-foot sandy beach ideal for swimming and sunbathing. In addition to its beach, the 1,248-acre park offers a wide range of outdoor recreation, including 13 miles of hiking trails, 20 fully furnished cabins, and 50 campsites for overnight stays.
