Tropical Storm Chantal brought widespread flooding to Moore County on Sunday, with Aberdeen Lake breaching its limits and inundating large portions of the surrounding area. The resulting deluge forced the closure of several major roads and left parts of the community submerged.
By midday, the entire Aberdeen Lake Park was under water, except for the Recreation Center building, which remained above flood level. Water engulfed the park’s playground equipment, and only the roof of the covered picnic area was still visible, standing as a reminder of what was once dry ground.

Floodwaters spilled south from the lake, surging down Aberdeen Creek and spilling over its banks. The torrent swept across U.S. Highway 1, where a vehicle was stranded at a traffic light near the junction with U.S. 15-501. Portions of N.C. Highway 5 at the same intersection also saw dangerous levels of water, prompting emergency response and rerouting efforts.
As of Sunday night, U.S. 1 remains closed in both directions between Highway 5 and the 15-501 intersection near Poole Automotive. Authorities indicated that the road would likely remain inaccessible overnight due to ongoing flood concerns and rising water levels.
Local officials are urging residents to avoid all flooded areas, follow detour signage, and monitor updates from the Moore County Emergency Management office. Cleanup and damage assessments are expected to begin once conditions are deemed safe.
