STATELINE, Nev. — Travelers driving through Lake Tahoe via U.S. 50 should prepare for lane closures and traffic delays beginning July 13, as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) resumes its major resurfacing project along the busy corridor.
Following a pause in construction during the Fourth of July holiday and the American Century Championship, crews will be back on-site Sunday night to continue the long-term highway repaving project, which stretches from the Spooner Summit Trailhead to the Nevada-California border.
Temporary Lane Reductions & Speed Changes
From July 13 through July 25, U.S. 50 will be reduced to one lane in each direction between State Route 207 and Elks Point Road during the following hours:

Sundays at 8 p.m. through Fridays at noon

All lanes will reopen for weekend travel
Drivers should expect moderate delays and reduced speed limits of 35 mph through construction zones. Although businesses and homes will remain accessible, temporary closures of side streets and driveways are possible during excavation. Steel plates and temporary grading will restore access as needed.
Ongoing Night Work Through 2026
The construction will continue intermittently on weekday nights through October 2025, resuming again from April to October 2026. The work includes:

Single-lane closures Sundays at 8 p.m. through Fridays at noon between Spooner Summit and the California state line

Minimum of one lane open in each direction at all times

No lane reductions during major holidays or large events

Scope of the Highway Improvements
The resurfacing effort spans over 13 miles of U.S. 50, focusing on modernizing the highway’s aging surface and improving driver safety. Key improvements include:

Removing and replacing three inches of asphalt

Replacing worn asphalt curbs with concrete curbs to improve durability, especially in winter

Installing concrete barriers and updated guardrails

Enhancing drainage systems to reduce water pooling on the roadway

Adding centerline rumble strips and double yellow median lines between Spooner Summit and Glenbrook to prevent head-on and cross-over crashes

Installing a new fiber optic trunk line to strengthen NDOT’s intelligent transportation system and communications infrastructure
Pedestrian Access and Sidewalk Closures
Sidewalks in the Stateline casino corridor will face intermittent closures. However, pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project.
Why It Matters
Many parts of the U.S. 50 corridor haven’t been resurfaced since 2007. The upgrades aim to provide a smoother and safer drive for the estimated 26,000 daily commuters and tourists who travel this scenic route near Lake Tahoe.
Long-Term Vision
This repaving is part of a broader vision under the U.S. 50 Tahoe East Shore Corridor Management Plan, developed with community input. The plan outlines future improvements to boost mobility, reduce crashes, and support economic activity in the region.
